Les sages-femmes face au déni de grossesse : regards introspectifs...

Abstract : Pregnancy denial is a symptom, which is characterized by the non-recognition of pregnancy by woman and her entourage. The frequency is estimated at one case of pregnancy denial in 500 births. The consequences of pregnancy denial are the risks of neonatal morbidity and mortality, in particular the risk of neonaticide. Some of these women/teenagers may be survivors of domestic violence, sexual abuses in childhood like incest that need to make decision of protective measures. Midwives are playing a major role in setting up those. Our study was conducted with semi-directive interviews of midwives in Jean Verdier and Lariboisière maternity hospitals. The purpose was to explore the midwife s' knowledge about pregnancy denial issues, their feelings of how to face and to offer a follow up. The complexity of making a diagnosis, screening incest and other violence and preventing neonaticide are the main difficulties revealed by our results. It is vital to set up training as soon as possible for improving the management of these very vulnerable women.
