Rites et cultures des femmes d'origine chinoise en périnatalité. Les difficultés rencontrées

Abstract : Rites and cultures of Chinese women in perinatal field: difficulties encountered
The motherhood of Chinese immigrants is characterized by several rites and traditional beliefs, which can generate misunderstandings or prejudices within the medical staff. Because of these observations, the following issue can be raised: do the midwives meet difficulties when taking care of these expected mothers from a medical, social and cultural point of view? We have carried out a qualitative study, by conducting a survey in three different maternities in Paris. In total, 52 midwives have answered our questionnaire. This study has highlighted two prevailing periods during which the medical care revealed to be the most difficult : the pregnancy and the postpartum. Even though the hospitals implemented various measures to overcome the language barrier as well as the cultural and social gap, these efforts are still being perceived as insufficient by the midwives. For a medical care that suits more specifically the needs of these women, other means should be more developed such as talk groups or the "femmes relais" concept should be more developed.
