Surveillance biologique des expositions professionnelles aux solvants en laboratoires de biochimie-toxicologie-pharmacologie

Abstract : Chemical hazard in laboratories is real and its management is essential. Several options are available to assess occupational exposures in these areas where multiple chemicals are handled. In the framework of the development of a service platform about the assessment and prevention of chemical risks by the Medicine and Occupational Health team at the University Hospital of Grenoble, it was decided to initiate a process of biomonitoring among laboratory workers. After prioritizing the most risky products which laboratory workers were exposed through a qualitative method specially developed to match the best in this particular professional field, a urine samples campaign was established to implement a biological monitoring to quantify their exposure. The results of calculation of risk through this method applied to the real conditions of handling and the results of analyzes of urine samples are compared. The method for prioritizing risks highlights significant risk for certain operations when there is no or very few solvents founded in the urine of exposed subjects. The risk prioritization method used allows bringing out the more risky situations but it does not provide a quantitative risk assessment. The biological results were rather reassuring but we must remain vigilant, especially as biological monitoring still knows many limitations.
