Bilan de l'année 2013, 1re année de Développement Professionnel Continu en médecine générale : enquête observationnelle, par questionnaire, auprès de 614 médecins généralistes de Dordogne et de Lot-et-Garonne

Abstract : Introduction: In France, quality improvement programs in health care include continuing education for professionals. In 2013, the new Continuing Professional Development (CPD) program became mandatory for all 22 health care professionals, replacing previous Continuing Medical Education (CME). Objectives: The aim of this survey was to assess the impact of CPD among family practitioners (FP) in Dordogne and Lot-et-Garonne, after its first year of implementation in 2013. Methods: In September 2014, 614 FP working in private practices in Dordogne and Lot-et-Garonne were randomly selected for this observational survey. They received a standardized and anonymous questionnaire by mail. They were contacted again by mail and e-mail from regional medical boards to improve participation rate. Questions included demographics and practice types, participation in CPD (obstacles, global perception…) and other CME programs, and suggestions for improvement of CPD. Factors influencing the impact of CPD were analyzed using Chi-2 test. Results: During a 3-month inclusion period, a statistically representative sample of 241 (39.3%) FP returned a valid questionnaire. Among them, 104 (43.2%) participated in the CPD program in 2013 and 155 (64.3%) in a CME program. Teaching physicians (N=52; 21.6%) and attendees of previous CME programs (N=185; 76.8%) were more likely to participate in CPD in 2013 (respectively, p=0.003 and p‹0.00001). Main reasons for non-participation were lack of time (N=97; 70.8%) and replacement practitioners (N=38; 27.7%). Suggestions for improvement were: additional CPD topics (N=115; 47.7%), simplification of registration process (N=76; 31.5%), and increase in financial compensation (N=70; 29.1%). Conclusion: For the first year of implementation, the participation rate for CPD was correct among FP. However, these programs need to be more attractive in order to achieve high participation, and, as a result, improve quality in health care.
