The Turn of the Word. Discours et performances chez les Irish Travellers

Abstract : This study presents an analysis of Irish Travellers’ speech production through the lens of their oral literature, music and language practices. We try to understand throughout which processes Travellers attempt to come within the scope of the idea of the Irish nation, while claiming a difference and distance, as much historically than socially. In order to seize on those aspects, we look at the different discourses that manifested concerning them, whether political, popular or scientific. Theses discourses and attitudes from the surrounding society actively influence the construct of Travellers’ speech and participate in readjusting it permanently. The analysis brought by number of authors having worked on Irish’s and other Gypsy groups’ oral practices, bring new perspectives that are yet little explored regarding the processes that take place in Irish Travellers' speech production.
