Place et besoins de la médecine manuelle. Ostéopathie dans la pratique des médecins généralistes du Service de Santé des Armées

Abstract : Introduction : Osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) has recently developed itself quite significantly in France, both in civilian and military spheres. No practical study to date has ever been conducted in the French army. The aim of our study was to appreciate the knowledge, attitude and practices of military general practitioners in this domain. Materials and methods : We have carried out an observational epidemiological study relying on an anonymous survey sent to 844 military general practitioners operating in the French army in 2014. Results : The participation rate was of 46%. The majority of military general practitioners declared having average to inadequate knowledge in terms of OMM. Meanwhile 86% of them seemed to want to improve their knowledge. They valued the medical use of the OMM in their military practice and its specificities (sports pathology, type of patient, military specialties, foreign mission constraints). Personally practicing OMM significantly altered the osteopathic orientation and treatment of patients and was associated with holding an OMM, sports medicine and mesotherapy diploma. Spinal, hip, ankle and foot pathologies and muscle contractures were the most frequently treated. Muscle techniques (“muscle energy techniques” and sustained pressure) and joint techniques were most often employed. Conclusion : OMM in the French army remains underdeveloped. Its interest is considerable, justifying its essential future development in the military.
