Raisonnement et conduites explicatives de bilingues de grande section maternelle tout-venants et suivis en orthophonie

Abstract : Our research is part of an exploratory qualitative methodology. Our first goal is to show the role of early bilingualism on the development of metacognitive skills and logical reasoning in kindergarten children receiving a speech therapy treatment and all-comers compared to their monolingual peers. Our second objective is to see if this effect differs whether bilingual children receiving speech therapy are simultaneous or consecutive bilingual. Thirty-seven children have been evaluated through three items from the UDN-II (Meljac and Lemmel 2007), Franco-Arab bilingual, Franco-Turkish and French monolingual enrolled in kindergarten last year, out of which 18 of them received a speech therapy treatment. The analysis of explanatory process, consecutive to logical manipulative reasoning, that is typical to these items, shows in most cases, the cumulative effects of bilingualism with a speech therapy treatment on the development of metacognitive skills and logical reasoning for all bilingual groups. Several observations have raised the question of differences in the diagnosis of bilingual children receiving a speech therapy treatment and underline the interest of the “meta" skills analysis as a supplement for speech therapy assessment of bilingual children.
