La prise en charge des nouveau-nés de parents "Roms migrants" : étude en Seine-Saint-Denis

Abstract : Background Roma migrants in France are a sanitarily high risk population, due to difficult healthcare access and care coverage. Existing reports describe poor infantile health and low levels of preventive follow-up. There is little data about this subject and no data about neonatal follow-up. The purpose of this study was to realize a comprehensive review of neonatal health coverage and by doing so, to determine the reasons for this potential lack of understanding and coverage, in order to find some ways of improving the information and the follow-up. Methods We realized a qualitative study based on semi-directives interviews. Fifteen interviews were done in Seine-Saint-Denis during a nine month period. We interviewed eleven women, three men and two couples. Five interviews took place in Roma camps thanks to the organization “Médecins du Monde”, six outside camps thanks to “Romcivic” and four in an “integrative village”. To improve our results, we used participative observation in the Roma place of life. Results and conclusion Neonatal care was established as globally positive. The interviews showed a good involvement in medical practice and receptivity to prevention messages. The care restricting factors we found were mainly linked to language barrier and precarious living conditions. An improved understanding of Roma migrant’s social and cultural characteristics led us to think on ways to offer a more appropriate coverage to this sanitarily high risk population.
