Abstract : Background: Following the alarming increase in sexually transmitted diseases and the significant morbidity amongst young people, the national plan against AIDS and STD 2010-2014 has been specifically oriented towards prevention. It recommends STD screen-tests for women who go to family planning centers. The aim was to identify the most adequate moment for a women to be informed of STD when she comes for an abortion at Saint Paul (Reunion) health center. The plan also studied the medical team, the right moment for the screening test and the handing out of results. Methods: this cross-sectional descriptive study took place between June and October 2014. A survey was administered on the phone to all women, 10 to 15 days after their abortion request at the health center. Results: 159 female patients answered the survey. 80,8% of them believe that coming to the health center for their abortion is the adequate moment to talk about STD, especially young women. They do not seem to worry about the team that is going to be in charge. Concerning the screening through blood testing, 58,6% of women would rather do it at the health center, whereas 24,8% of them would give preference to their general practitioner. Concerning the vaginal test, 60,5% of the women would prefer doing it at the health center whereas 19,1% of them would favor their general practitioner. Three-quarter of women would rather have their results directly available at the health center. Conclusion: Health center who offer sexual prevention advice seem to be the most adequate place to talk about STD, especially to young women. We need to innovate towards pedagogical content. Nevertheless, it is crucial not to forget that a large amount of women is still relying on their general practitioner.
