L'éducation thérapeutique du patient peut-elle améliorer la prise en charge de l'enfant atteint de carie précoce de l'enfance ?

Abstract : Therapeutic Patient Education is a recent and innovative concept initially designed for patients with chronic diseases. It differs from simple information or ‘tips’ and is based around humanities, social and medical sciences providing autonomy and a collaborative relationship for the patients, their families and health cares providers. Dental caries is a major public health problem, recognized by the WHO as the 3rd worldwilde scourge and so from an early age. The early childhood caries which is before the age of 6, is a severe clinical form of the disease. Considered among academics as the most widespread infectious disease in France, it has numerous negative dental, functional and esthetical impacts on the children, their families and on the society. A small group of youngsters is at high-risk accumulating all the major risks to oral health and the preventive mesures of the actual healthcare policies are inefficient. Setting up therapeutic patient education campains aimed at those at-risk children could lead to improve medical care but also would provide an efficient way to tackle relapses which occure more frequently in this population.
