Développer les compétences de lecture et d'écriture des élèves sourds de collège

Abstract : This research work deals with developing the reading and writing competences of deaf students in secondary schools. The difficulties they are facing with writing raise questions: are deaf writings showing recurring features that could demonstrate a particular cognitive way of functioning? What pedagogical strategies will be likely to solve these problems? We observed a panel of 10 of such students, in inclusive education. They fall into two groups: one with students who cannot write a narration, and the other one with students whose narration is really short. There is an obvious link between the syntactic complexities and the quality of the narration. The students who can write better narrations have a good level in French sign language. In their writings we can notice mistakes specifically made by deaf students. As a consequence, it is necessary to implement specific strategies and to use French Sign language as the teaching language of those deaf students whose hearing is severely impaired.
