La spiruline : indications thérapeutiques, risques sanitaires et conseils à l'officine

Abstract : The dietary supplement market is rapidly expanding. Finding its way into pharmacies, many patient visits today end with a recommendation of some kind of dietary supplement, such as herbal medicine or micronutrition. Spirulina, a microscopic seaweed with a varied and rich composition, is one such dietary supplement that has caught the attention of the pharmaceutical world. The composition of this algae has a number of pharmacological and therapeutical benefits. Not only is it cholesterol-lowering, hypoglycaemic and antihypertensive, it helps in cases of malnutrition and iron deficiency anaemia, strengthening the immune system and even playing a role in cancer prevention. It also aids in the regulation of antioxidants, fighting hyperactivity, enhancing endurance and athletic performance, while also working as an anti-inflammatory and having an anti-allergy and anti-viral effect. A source of zeaxanthin and a heavy metal chelator, this algae has also been known to help prevent neurodegenerative diseases. Spirulina can be used safely; free from heavy metals, toxins and bacteria, it does not result in a Vitamin A overdose, nor a Vitamin B12 deficit, with only a few cases of side-effects being noted.Advice given at the office is simplified, as this algae can be beneficial at any age. With few contra-indications, the algae can be safely used with other medicinal products, without fear of side effects or the need for many warnings about safe use.
