Les conséquences des régimes végétariens et végétaliens pendant la grossesse et la lactation, sur la femme enceinte, le fœtus, le nouveau-né et le nourrisson A partir d’une revue de la littérature

Abstract : Introduction: Nowadays, vegetarian and vegan diets are experiencing such a renewed interest in our societies. Yet, these diets seem to be responsible of many nutritional and vitamin imbalances. The aim of this study is therefore to identify these dietary imbalances’ consequences during pregnancy and breastfeeding, among pregnant women, fetuses, newborns and infants. Materials and method: To meet this objective, a literature review has been realized: 18 articles, published between 1981 and 2015, have been selected on Pubmed and the Cochrane Library databases and also through a research by step, with the following keywords : vegetarian diet, vegan diet, consequences, outcomes, dietary deficiency, vitamins, pregnancy and breastfeeding. Results: The vitamin B12 deficiency is the most frequently identified dietary deficiency during pregnancy and breastfeeding among vegetarian and vegan women, knowing that there are also other potential deficiencies : zinc, iron, calcium and proteins. These deficiencies have many important maternal, fetal, neonatal and infant consequences, such as anemias, intrauterine growth retardations, failures to thrive, neurological disorders, long-term mental retardations, etc. Conclusion: Given the seriousness of these diets’ consequences, it would seem appropriate to set up on the one hand an early and systematic screening of these diets from the very early months of pregnancy, and on the other hand a supplementation adapted to these different potential deficiencies. The role of the midwife is important due to its proximity with pregnant and lactating women and with the newborns.
