La puissance politique et géopolitique de la Russie d'après les écrits de Louis-Philippe de Ségur (1785-1789)

Abstract : During the second half of the eighteenth century and the reign of Catherine II, Russia took its place in the European geopolitics, rising to the height of the other powers of the continent. The sovereign wanted to continue the work of Peter the Great in modernizing her country by offering the laws in line with its age but mainly by becoming a European power in itself. Through its alliances, its objections to certain sovereigns and military power, Russia became a feared country during the Enlightenment. It was through the writings of the French Plenipotentiary Minister to the Court of St. Petersburg, Louis-Philippe de Segur that we will look at this question of politics and geopolitics studying Russian relations that the Russian Empire maintained with other European countries and the Ottoman Empire, but also by looking at the country's government. For this, at first we will revisit the context of drafting the various writings used in this work. Then we will focus on Russia as a despotic country, led by a woman to the ideas of the Enlightenment. We will see how and with whom she led her state while analysing her relationship with the other European powers. Subsequently, we will focus on the reasons that pushed France and Russia will to sign a trade treaty then we will study the evolution of the talks by observing the obstacles that the young French had to overcome but also the aid he received and the important points of this agreement. Finally, we will consider the conflicting relations between the Ottoman Empire and the Russian Empire which never ceased to deteriorate in the 1780s and eventually lead to a war in 1787.
