L'éducation efface-t-elle les frontières ? L'exemple de la fécondité en Méditerranée

Abstract : The acceleration of the decline in fertility and the spectacular growth of education in societies has been a major upheaval during the 20th century. The relationship between the two phenomena emerged as a key discovery in the demographic field. We propose to renew the studies that combine fertility and education by integrating a spatial dimension. The framework of globalisation guides our research on homogenisation of spaces and behaviours. The Mediterranean area constitutes a privileged field of study as a theatre of diverse reproductive behaviours and various levels of education. The construction of a unique database at the sub-national level was a major methodological challenge. This research highlights the stakes involved in collecting and harmonizing heterogeneous data. Moreover, it questions the existence of territorial fertility anchors based on education. The sub-national scale renews interest in spatial diffusion and the differential adoption of fertility norms.
