Sage-femme et consultation préconceptionnelle

Abstract : Introduction: The preconception care has replaced the premarital interview further to its removal in 2007. In spite of numerous recommendations, in particular the HAS ones, this consultation is not performed a lot in France. The midwives, with the evolution of their skills, can be brought to realize this consultation. The aim of this study is to identify the vision and the place the midwifes of the Bouches du Rhône have by doing it. Study design: A first study has been done to identify their vision and practices with semi-directive interviews. Then a second study with questionnaires to identify their role. Results: The interviews show that the preconception care is seen as a medical consultation in theory but not realized in practice. Most of the midwifes think that their lack of communication and the lack of women’s knowledge are the main reasons for it not being done often. Nevertheless, the midwifes are sure that this consultation has lots of benefits. They think they are competent and that they have to be part of the health care providers doing it. This study demonstrate that 77% of the midwifes of Bouches du Rhône do not practice the preconception consultation. The midwifes that are doing it, only realize this consultation rarely for 76% of them. Conclusion: The preconception consultation is rarely provided by the midwifes. Nevertheless, their vision is rather positive. A lot of the midwifes would be favorable to its implementation.
