L’autopsie psychologique : revue de la littérature, état des connaissances actuelles et propositions pour une harmonisation des pratiques

Abstract : Suicide remains a major public health issue with more than 800,000 cases a year worldwide. The increase of the field of knowledge relative to the suicidal phenomenon makes it possible to better define risk subjects and to propose more adapted prevention strategies. This literature review proposes an inventory of current knowledge concerning psychological autopsy. This tool, born under the impetus of Edwin Shneidman, had historically aimed to clarify the circumstances of a death and in particular the psychological state of the deceased. Its application has gradually expanded to search for markers of suicidal risk and the resolution of medico-legal problems. The psychological autopsy method has also proved its validity in post-mortem diagnoses. However, it is subject to many biases. Its formalization and standardization are heterogeneous and partial. This is why we propose in the last part a synthesis of recommendations to facilitate the application of the method. It will ensure a good scientific validity while respecting ethical criteria.
