Haut potentiel intellectuel et comorbidités psychiatriques chez l’adulte : étude exploratoire de prévalence et des praticiens impliqués

Abstract : Background: medias frequently report on adults with high intelligence quotient (IQ) mental distress. Although high IQ children psychiatric comorbidities were regularly studied, scientific data regarding adults remains limited. The main objective of this study was to describe the psychiatric comorbidities prevalence in adults with high IQ. Secondary objectives were to study potential consequences of IQ testing and to examine the care pathway of this population. Méthods: this cross-sectional, descriptive and exploratory study was conducted with an online survey provided via email to MENSA France members from April to December 2016. Data were processed by the JISPED association through univariate analysis. Results: 288 subjects were included. Lifetime prevalence of psychiatric history was 52%, with 35,4% depression history and 34% anxiety history. Lifetime prevalence of psychotropic medication consumption was 52%. 60,76% scored 4 or above on ASRS 6 which may have been consistent with ADHD. 35,4% consulted with a psychiatrist about a psychiatric issue, 34% with a psychologist and 23,26% with a general practitioner. Conclusion: it seems high IQ adults are at risk on a psychopathological level. Further studies are necessary considering scientific literature scarcity on that matter.
