Sport et transidentité : représentations des sportif·ves trans' dans la presse française (1977-2018)

Abstract : Transgender people can be athletes: at an elite level or in leisure activities. They can decide to play for a club team or to train by themselves. They can practice before, during or after initiating a transition process either at a social, administrative and/or medical level. (Anderson & Travers, 2017b; Birrell & Cole, 1990; Buzuvis, 2011; Cohen, 2007; Elling-Machartzki, 2017; Jones et al., 2017; Krane, 2014; Love, 2012; Lucas, 2009b; McClearen, 2015; Travers & Deri, 2010). In an organization that reinforces the gender and sex bicategorization, trans athletes are most of the time excluded and exposed to vulnerability, but some of them still manage to find a place. Since 1977 and the outing of the tennis player Renée Richards the French press has relayed the stories of some trans athletes. But how are these athletes represented? What are the discourses around them? Who speaks to say what? In this master’s thesis, 31 articles published between 1977 and 2018 in a press agency, general news, LGBT+, women’s and sports newspapers were analyzed. The results indicate that the discourses conveyed by and in the press do not take into account the multiples discriminations that trans athletes can experience and the diversity of their transitions.
