Méta-analyse sur l'association entre exposition professionnelle aux solvants et paramètres du sperme

Abstract : Objectives: Solvent exposure is among the most common occupational exposures to chemical toxicants. Several studies have described adverse effects of solvents on semen parameters, but the data are often contradictory. We conducted a meta-analysis to evaluate the risk of alteration in semen parameters related to occupational exposure to solvents. Methods: From the PubMed database, we selected studies analysing the semen of subjects occupationally exposed to solvents, compared to unexposed controls. Using the STATA statistical software, the meta-analysis was performed from the two types of population included (exposed and unexposed) employing the distribution of the various semen parameters analysed. The results are expressed as a standardized mean difference (SMD), associated with its 95% confidence interval (95% CI). Results: Seven studies were included in the study: 272 workers exposed and 247 workers unexposed workers to glycol ethers, perchloroethylene, aromatic hydrocarbons, N, N-dimethylformamide and carbon disulfide. The meta-analysis revealed a significant decrease in ejaculated volume [SMD = -0.35 (-0.63; -0.07)] and sperm concentration [SMD = -0.36 (-0.64, -0.08)] in workers exposed to solvents compared to in unexposed controls. The sperm morphology, viability and motility also appeared to be lower in exposed workers but not significantly. Conclusion: In the first meta-analysis on this topic, we demonstrated a significant decrease in ejaculate volume and sperm concentration in workers occupationally exposed to solvents, compared with unexposed workers. These results highlight the importance of taking into account and preventing reprotoxic risks to male fertility in the workplace.
