Architectures contemporaines en terre crue en France de 1976 à 2015 : pourquoi et comment les acteurs construisent avec ce matériau aujourd'hui ?

Abstract : The revival of contemporary earthen architecture emerged in a context of unprecedented energy crisis in the 70’s : oil shocks, the end of postwar demographic boom and the french colonial empire, created a breeding ground to ideas in opposition with the consumer society. Architects, engineers, craftsmen, self-builders, started to think about new building ethics and differents way of building. The concepts of sustainable development, renewable energy, use of local materials and user participation appeared. The Domaine de la Terre in Villefontaine is an iconic figure of this revival. This major operation of 65 housing units was delivered in 1985. What was its influence on the new construction sector? Getting a good overview today of that particular architectural production on the french national territory, is limited by the lack of scientific studies and publications. This research provides a first panoramic overview of contemporary earthen architecture in France from 1976 to 2015. It focuses on the practices, motivations and operational strategies developed by the protagonists. It is based on the census of over 250 operations of new earthen buildings and a series of unpublished testimonies of the actors themselves. This research capitalises cultural references on Contemporary Earthen Architecture on a national level and offers a new cultural reference for professionals increasingly interested in the Contemporary Earthen Architecture.
