La troupe dramatique du théâtre national Daniel Sorano de Dakar : entre négritude et francophonie (1954-1984)

Abstract : During the 1960s, when Independence raises questions about national identity of the new African countries, some intellectuals who support Negritude come to power and claim recognition of African culture based on notion of “cultural dialogue” between Africa and Europe. In Senegal, Léopold Sédar Senghor undertakes an ambitious cultural policy grounded in cultural cooperation conducted by France. He builds the Daniel Sorano Theatre in Dakar in 1965, one of the first national theaters in Africa, and to develop an “original Senegalese theatre”, he creates a theatre company employed by the State after the World Festival of Negro Arts in 1966, the director of which became the French Raymond Hermantier in 1968. This study focuses on ideological, material and human links between the drama group – led by the President’s nephew from 1965 until 1984 – and Senegalese government. The Theatre is an important tool for development of Ministry of Culture plan, and from 1970s onwards is increasingly involved in President’s policy. The Sorano Company becomes a cultural ambassador for Senegal in foreign policy, serves as a diplomatic tool and is closed to the Francophonie institutions. On the internal level, it supports the Ministry of National Education’s initiatives and conveys Negritude ideas that inspired the global policy of development driven by Léopold Sédar Senghor. Company’s creations are tied to his conception of African people and culture.
