Les Italiens dans l'effort de guerre romain de la deuxième guerre punique (218-201 avant notre ère)

Abstract : This study focuses on the participation of the Italians in the Roman war effort during the Second Punic War, mostly from the basis of Livy's Ab Vrbe Condita. The work on Livy's vocabulary is an important part of this study. This work shows that Livy doesn't clearly identify Italians as an homogeneous group, even if some specific italian caracteristics are brought to light. The way in which Livy opposes, or associates the Romans and the Italians is examinated, taking into acount the Social War's influence on Livy's work and on his idea of Italy. It shows that even if the Italians aren't identified as Romans, the two groups are still closer, in opposition with foreigners. This ambiguous situation of the Italians, between Rome and rest of the world, is especially noticeable in the military field, which is the environment in which Livy distinguishes Romans and Italians in the most clear fashion. The remaining of the study focuses on the role played by this group in the roman war effort, inside and outside the military field. The material and logistic support given to Rome by the Italians reveals their political positioning, but also its motivations. It appears that the italian community's loyalty may be dictated by a local, and not roman-focused, interest, and that the choice between Romans or Carthaginians may only be a pretext within a more restrained political game. The way in which Rome adjusts its requests depending on these positionings reveals it's will to take advantage of some community's sympathy, but also the will to enforce its domination on the more reluctant Italians. Finaly, the way in which the rebellion of some parts of Italy influence the Roman army's operation is analysed. It appears that the place taken by Italian soldiers isn't fundamentally challenged, and that Roman military operations still work in an efficient way during all the conflict.
