L’expérience de la conversion en Huronie du point de vue des Hurons-Wendats (1634-1649)

Abstract : In 1634, Jean de Brébeuf and its Jesuits pairs settles in Huronia where they have the mission to evangelize the Wendat sedentary tribes, allies to the French. Despite being a short-term experience and having to face the resistance of numerous Amerindians, the Jesuit mission was able to forge an organized and strong Christian community among the Natives. Even when Huronia disappeared after the war against the Iroquois, the missionaries managed to provide us with a massive amount of information through their personal letters so that the mission amongst the Wendat remained one of the most well-known Jesuit experience in New-France. In this Master Thesis, we propose to use these pieces of data, combined with the archaeological evidences left by the Natives and the testimonies of other witnesses such as Samuel de Champlain, to highlight the Wendat perspective of their own Christianization. By focusing on the transformations undergone by some baptized Natives, we will assess the reasons of their conversion, their compre hension of these new beliefs and their relationships with those who did not accept the religion of the foreigners. Our purpose is to present the history of the conversion of the Wendats as a Native experience by displaying them as actors accepting or rejecting a new religion and, by doing so, improving our understanding of the history of the evangelization of Canada.
