État des lieux des thérapeutiques non médicamenteuses utilisées par les femmes dans la gestion des symptômes les plus courants au cours de la grossesse, au sein du bassin grenoblois

Abstract : Background. During pregnancy, many women suffer from “common complaints”. These complaints occur frequently and are perfectly normal; they play an important part in women’s experience of pregnancy. Modern medicine offers few possibilities of treatment, and the demand for complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is high. Objective. To describe the prevalence of CAM use in Grenoble and its surrounding area, in order to gain knowledge through women’s experience. Methods. Quantitative transversal observational study of the use of CAMs by women. A questionnaire was delivered to women having been through pregnancy. It included the most frequent complaints and studied non-medical methods used to relieve them. 400 questionnaires were distributed to the post-partum sections of maternities in and around Grenoble from May to July 2019. Results were analysed using Excel and R-cran software. Results. 213 questionnaires were collected and analysed, representing a 53% response rate. 97.2% of women used at least one CAM. A breastfeeding cushion was used by 46% of women suffering from insomnia and 53% of women with lower back pain. Changes of diet were used by 60% of women suffering from heartburn, 58% of women with nausea, 52% of women with constipation and 37% of women with insomnia. Elevating legs was used to avoid cramps by 42% of women, and to soothe swollen legs by 51% of women. Women with higher socio-economic levels used more CAMs. Age, marital status and number of previous pregnancies had no influence. Conclusion. Women use many different CAMs during pregnancy to relieve common complaints. This notion outlines the necessity for healthcare providers, including doctors, to acquire information in order to give better advice to pregnant women.
