Le projet de vie du patient atteint de SLA : Quel accompagnement par l'ergothérapeute ?

Abstract : Introduction: ALS is a rare neurodegenerative disease; it causes a progressive paralysis of all the muscles and causes death 3 to 5 years after the diagnosis on average. The management of these patients is coordinated in France with reference centres. This research aimed to know how occupational therapist support them in their life project. Method: A qualitative approach was used. Three occupational therapists were interviewed. Two who work in a reference centre and one who works in a rehabilitation unit. Results: The interviewed occupational therapists agreed that they have to constantly adjust their intervention to the patient’s needs and priorities. A partnership with other professionals appears to be essential to manage these patients. The patients’ home is a very special environment, it enables to assess their true difficulties and to establish a therapeutic relationship of trust. Conclusion: The disease’s temporality and likely course limit intervention possibilities and require the prioritization of needs and an important reactivity. However, anticipation is difficult because support must be consistent with the patient’s rhythm and psychological stage.
