Pratique musicale en milieu scolaire. Effet sur l'apprentissage en lecture d'élèves issus de populations socio-économiquement défavorisées

Abstract : Public health studies find that there is a mismatch between the needs for the management of specific learning disorders and the provision of care, particularly in socio-economically disadvantaged populations. To respond to this problem, during a call for projects from the regional health agency Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, a regional association managing a care network, Résodys, proposed the establishment in the middle of innovative method of prevention, based on musical practice. It is within the framework of this program that we conducted our study in a school of Marseille ranked priority education network. We observed the evolution compared to the norm, between the first and the third quarter, of learning, especially in reading, of students of first grade who benefited from this method. For this we used the subpart "CP – Les apprentissages" of the test "évaluation des fonctions cognitives et des apprentissages". Regarding our main objective, our results did not show any significant deterioration of reading skills compared to the norm as might have been expected in these populations: for the total of "reading" tests the rate of evolution of the Z -score is -1.377 (p = 0.077). The number of pupils who obtained results considered to be deficient in reading, that is to say a score lower than two standard deviations, did not increase significantly: the evolution rate is 2,690 (p = 0,101 ). A school-based musical practice could thus have a protective effect on reading learning against the negative impacts of a disadvantaged socio-economic environment. Other, more powerful studies targeting only learning in reading could confirm this hypothesis. If the protective effect of music on learning in reading was confirmed, we could propose to generalize this musical practice from schooling in kindergarten.
