Les réticences des professionnels de santé devant l’utilisation des robots-sociaux en milieux gériatriques : réflexion technique, ontologique et épistémologique sur la relation à la robotique sociale

Abstract : The rapid growth of social robotics in the health sector in conjunction with an aging population expected to double by the year 2050 questions the rapid spread of said technology. The development of this emerging field relies on a large corpus of litterature, making arguments in order to rethink the patient-carer relationship and discuss the ethical tensions arrising from it. Talks on the topic often present the social robot as an innovating technology calling for the creation of a theoretical and conceptual framework in order to move forward in a context where reluctant health professionals are questionning the definition and worth of social robots. How will the social robot fit in the technical continuum, from automated system to AI ? Could thinking of this practice in relation to the broader history of technics help us define the nature of the relationship between machines and caregiver ? We aim at reflecting on the underlying framework of this practice from an ontological and technical standpoint. We also looked into the epistemological value of scientific discourse in this field. To this end we used a twofold qualitative material resulting in interviews with researchers as well as interview transcripts from care professionals shared by the ROSIE project. We then operated a thematic and analogic assessment. On one hand we identified the specific representations of the concept of robot and the several strategies implemented to establish a pratice articulated around a three-tier care relationship. On the other hand we attempted to bring to light the mecanism originating in the creation of new scientific ideas following a process of analogy analyses both semantic and formal, resulting in a reflexion on the structure of truths and their institutionalization. This method allowed us to bring out three core points: on the ontological question, the social robot brings up the concept of blur resulting in conflicted perceptions. On the matter of worth, it brings up a concept of evidency which is hiding processes. In the area of knowledge, it embodies the part imagination plays in the emergence of truths and the fictional aspect of the knowledge created.
