Les comorbidités psychiatriques dans le trouble du spectre de l’alcoolisation fœtale : revue de la littérature

Abstract : Background: psychiatric comorbidities have been identified in over 90% of people with a history of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE). Currently mental health providers become the main actors for care of people with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). But what do we know nowadays knowledge about psychiatric comorbidities of FASD ? Objectives: this literature review aims to bring summarize available knowledge in peer- reviewed scientific journals about psychiatric comorbidities of FASD. Method: our work consisted in a systematic literature review based on PRISMA guidelines of the articles published the last 20 years with a manual search within Medline and PsyInfo databases. Results: the data set shows that FASD can be considered as a major risk factor for psychiatric disorders. The population with FASD has higher rates than the general population of ADHD, intellectual disability, learning disability, addictions, psychotic disorders, personality disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety disorders, mood disorders and sleep problems. Conclusion: it is crucial to systematically search for psychiatric comorbidities when a diagnosis of FASD is established. Because of the developmental characteristics of FASD, it is also important to include in the psychiatric anamnesis a systematic search for history of PAE. In FASD, the training of professionals associated with the development of screening tools accessible to current practice are important issues. These actions must aim the harmonization of definitions and provide more representative studies of the population seen in psychiatric consultations.
