Asthénie chez les étudiants : y a-t-il un lien avec le temps passé devant les écrans ? Une étude observationnelle à l'Université de Corse

Abstract : Objectives:
Nowadays, screens are omnipresent in our environment and they are becoming a public health issue. The main objective of this study was to find among students, if the time spent on the screens could lead to asthenia. The second objective was to assess whether the time spent on the screens could lead to a drop in school results.
Methods:
Data came from an observational, transversal and descriptive study carried out among volunteer students at the University of Corsica, from September to December 2017. An evaluation has been built from a selfquestionnaire of the time spent on the screens per day, the school results, and the asthenia through the Pichot scale.
Results:
Among the results of 137 students, 39.4% of students spent between 3 and 6 hours per day on screens. The results show that the average Pichot score was at 6.965 for students spending 5 hours or less per day, and 7.812 for those who spent more than 5 hours per day (p = 0.409). No significant difference has been found between the two groups about asthenia. Regarding the school results, a significant decrease of 1,056 points (p = 0.026) on the overall average has been found between the two groups defined above.
Conclusion:
This study hasn’t shown any influences of the time spend on screens regarding asthenia, but we found a significant decrease on the overall average for students spending more time on screens. We found similar results on the school performance on the adult population studied and the studies from literature carried out on children.
