Représentations de l’hépatite C (du dépistage au traitement) chez les usagers de drogues : étude qualitative auprès d’usagers de drogues consultant au Centre Planterose (CEID) de Bordeaux et à la maison d’arrêt de Gradignan

Abstract : Introduction: hepatitis C is an infectious liver disease which is currently an important public health issue in the world due to its high prevalence and serious complications, to which the patients are exposed in absence of treatment. New effective therapeutics are recently available and the WHO has put in place a global strategy to eliminate the virus by 2030. In France, drug users represent the main reservoir of hepatits C. To reach this goal, drug users should ideally cooperate in the screening, the treatment and the follow-up. Our goal is to determine the representation drug users have of hepatitis C, its screening and treatment. Population and methods: we conducted a qualitative study with individual semi-structured interviews in two centers: a CAARUD and a prison. We included 21 drug users beetwenn March 2017 and November 2018. Results Drug users who are interviewed know or heard about hepatitis C and know how to protect themselves from it. Hepatits C tends to be minimized by some users because of its curable nature. Regarding screening, users appreciate the TROD for its accessibility, simplicity and speed. Finally, regarding treament, it is not always known to users. Those who have been treated recently have a good image. Conclusion: drug users don’t seem to show major unwillingness to be followed and treated againt hepatitis C. However, it will be necessary to be wary of the trivialization of the disease and the unknown risk of recontamination and to count on the mobilization of all the actors of health in order to obtain the expected results.
