Impact de la méditation mindfulness sur le vieillissement physiologique au niveau cérébral et cellulaire : revue de la littérature

Abstract : Given the extent of the economic and societal challenges regarding the global population aging, Health Authorities are alarmed by the urgency of considering ways to promote healthy aging. Among the life-enhancing factors contributing to healthy aging, mindfulness meditation (MM) is generating interest on its impact on seniors. Over this work, we analyzed the impact of MM on cell and brain aging, through a review of the literature. The aging of the cells, associated with a shortening of the telomeres, is accelerated by oxidative stress and perceived stress. In an elderly population, MM has been shown to reduce perceived stress, suggesting its impact on slowing cellular aging. At brain level, recent articles have demonstrated that MM is able to soften gray substance degeneration by stimulating neuroplasticity. Through this process, the MM would decrease selective attention disorders, memory complaints and reduce perceived stress. This literature review is encouraging about the benefits of MM in improving mental health during aging. Further studies are needed to confirm the mechanisms in an elderly population.
