Place de la relaxation dans un service d’addictologie : étude pilote et résultats préliminaires de séances de relaxation chez des patients hospitalisés pour trouble de l’usage de l’alcool

Abstract : Introduction: The practice of relaxation is a complementary care strategy already used in many chronic diseases. However, it is still hardly used in addictology, despite considerable potential benefits. This thesis work analyses the feasibility of relaxation for patients hospitalized for alcohol withdrawal and its effects on their levels of anxiety and depression. Materials and Methodology: This is a pilot, descriptive, observational, questionnaire-based study with prospective and monocentric recruitment which took place in spring 2019. Included patients had to answer a questionnaire specially created for this study, assessing their level of well-being, they also had to answer the HAD questionnaire. Results: Their were 15 patients included in a group who benefited from relaxation sessions and 16 patients inclued in a control group without relaxation sessions. The pathological anxiety score and the total pathological HAD score decreased significantly for patients practising relaxation during their stay in hospital, compared with the control group. The pathological depression score also decreased significantly for these patients compared to the control group. Conclusion: Beyond the benefits already described in other diseases, relaxation allows patient to have a better experience of their alcohol withdrawal with a decrease in their levels of pathological anxiety and in their total pathological HAD score. It is a drug-free technique, highly praised by patients. However, in order to develop the practice of relaxation in addictology, other longitudinal, randomized, controlled and larger scale based studies are necessary.
