La transmission des savoirs traditionnels sur les plantes médicinales à La Réunion. Étude qualitative réalisée auprès de personnes âgées en EHPAD

Abstract : Introduction : The use of medicinal plants, which is booming, is widespread in Reunion Island. The elderly seem to be the holders of this traditional knowledge and the question of its transmission arises. The objective of this study was to understand, from their point of view, how this knowledge was transmitted between generations. Method : This was a qualitative study with semi-structured individual interviews of elderly people at the Saint-François d'Assises EHPAD in Saint-Denis de La Réunion. The analysis of the data was based on the principle of grounded theory method. Results : Nine elderly people were interviewed between June and August 2019. Their knowledge has proved to be rich. They have been transmitted to them by their close geographical and social environment through word of mouth, observation or consumption within their family. At the time, transmission was justified by the need to use plants to treat oneself because the "modern" health system was underdeveloped and expensive. Since then, the island's socio-economic development has altered the transmission between generations. The current lack of interest in traditional remedies and confidence in modern medicine has fuelled a feeling of illegitimacy among the elderly, who consider their knowledge obsolete. Conclusion : Our study reveals that the ways in which traditional knowledge about medicinal plants is transmitted have changed. The many current barriers to transmission lead to a loss of traditional knowledge. Elderly people and current generations should be made aware of the importance of this traditional knowledge for their preservation.
