Mutilations sexuelles féminines : connaissances et rôles des médecins généralistes dans la prise en charge, le dépistage et la prévention : étude quantitative auprès des médecins généralistes du Calvados et des internes en médecine générale de la faculté de Caen

Abstract : Introduction: Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is estimated to affect about 53,000 women in France. They have disastrous medical, psychological and sexual consequences. The general practitioner, a primary care practitioner, has a central role in the screening, prevention and management of FGM. Paradoxically, for many of them, this subject is not well known because it is rarely taught during medical studies. The purpose of the study was to assess the knowledge of general practitioners and residents in Calvados general medicine on this subject. Method: Quantitative cross-sectional descriptive study by questionnaire. Sampling by drawing lots and sending paper or web questionnaires after telephone contact and then call back. Results: 136 usable responses out of 503 questionnaires sent (27%). 50% of the participants do not feel able to recognize an MSF, 80% do not know the complications of FGM, 76.5% do not know the number of mutilated women living in France, 89% do not know the places of care or associations. 86% feel concerned about the care of FGM and 91% believe that the subject should be addressed more during the studies. Conclusion: Despite a lack of knowledge, general practitioners feel concerned by the problem of FGM and wish to be better trained.
