Abstract : Obesity is a public health issue whose management includes therapeutic patient education aiming at therapeutic lifestyle modifications. The objective of this study is to evaluate the impact of a telephonic follow- up on obese patients after a hospital stay. Method: a randomized clinical trial was conducted with obese patients hospitalized in the CMD from November 2, 2017 to April 30, 2018. The intervention was a telephonic follow-up at 1, 3 and 6 months (follow-up group) versus 6 months (control group). The main outcome was weight at six months. Physical activity and quality of life were secondary outcomes. Results: seventy-eight patients were included (37 in the follow-up group and 41 controls). After 6 months, the difference in weight loss was 0.49 kg (-3.02; 2.04). The difference in physical activity practice (Ricci and Gagnon score) was 0.2 (-3.5; 3.2). The difference in quality of life (EQVOD score) was 3.8 (-1.2; 8.6). These differences were not statistically significant. 62% of the followed-up patients saw a new doctor versus 37% of the control patients (p = 0.042), and 49% versus 22% started a new physical activity (p = 0.025). Conclusion: telephonic follow-up of obese patients after therapeutic patient education did not show any significant difference in weight, physical activity or quality of life. On the other hand, further studies would be needed to confirm the impact on new medical follow-ups and new physical activities.
