Dispositif VigilanS : connaissance et utilisation par les médecins généralistes du Calvados

Abstract : Background: As a global major public health problem, suicide is responsible for one death every 40 seconds. In 2016, there are almost 8500 suicides committed in France. The suicide prevention is an absolute national priority. In order to reduce the number of suicide death and the reattempts, VigilanS, a post-discharge surveillance program for suicide attempters, has been spread out in Basse Normandie. Since July 2017, at the University hospital of Caen, the admitted patients at the emergency department for a suicide attempt are taking part of the protocol. At the patients’s request, they can benefit of contact interventions after their attempt and their general practionner will be notified by mail of their entrance in the program. The purpose of the following work has been to evaluate among the general practitioners of Calvados the knowledge of VigilanS and its impact on their daily work. Method: We conducted a descriptive study by sending an anonymous questionnaire to every liberal general practitioners in Calvados. Results: We received back 226 surveys, representing a participation rate of 39.5%. Among them, 101 practitioners knew about the program, representing a rate of 45% of the study participants. In case of the suicide attempter’s presence in their patients and the mail receipt, a significant statistical link has been highlighted. Only 2,6% of the practitioners have changed their way to work since the establishment of VigilanS. Conclusion: The VigilanS protocol is enough well known among the practitioners but underused. In order to use it with an optimal efficiency, a public relation work should be considered among the general practionner.
