Regard des femmes généralistes sur leur parcours gynécologique : enquête qualitative auprès de 19 médecins généralistes de Gironde

Abstract : Introduction: the health of the medical staff has become a concern as medical professionals are faced with increasing uneasiness in the medical community. This is highlighted in issues linked to the medical care of a doctor and his/her self-treatment. It is recommended that women have consistent gynaecological follow-ups through regularly scheduled visits or maternity care. Women doctors, who are increasingly working in general medicine, are becoming by necessity, the patient. Our object was to understand these female doctors gynaecological follow-up background, and by extension, the representation of their medical care. Materials and methods: a qualitative study was conducted consisting of semi-structured individual interviews. Nineteen female doctors, settled in Gironde, were encountered. The interviews were transcribed verbatim and evaluated to explore emerging themes that help define and bring possible meaning to female doctors gynaecological follow-up care. Results: through gynaecological follow-up, we are able to look at other determining factors of female doctors’ general care and the relation of the doctor/patient doctor experience. We see a duality with consultations and care full of contradictions. This is true for gynaecological follow-up, even though it seems that they pay particular attention to it despite dealing with intimacy. Maternity plays a crucial part in this care, but it also can be an additional source of responsibilities, taking them away from the medical process. Conclusion: approaching female general practitioners’ health through gynecology, we better understand this very specific patient-doctor status, their body’s representations as persons and their individually centered medical experiences. Through this care, the female doctor has a unique opportunity to become the patient, unlike her male counterparts.
