Étude de la plausibilité sémiologique de la description des empoisonnements dans treize écrits d’Alexandre Dumas père

Abstract : Alexandre Dumas père was a very prolific author. His work is marked by numerous mentions of poisoning. The Nineteenth century is a time during wich medical semiology and clinical toxicology are defined by a fast development. It is interesting too look further into the plausibility of the different poisoning cases described by one of the most renowned author of this century. To realise this work, we chose among the narrative writings of Alexandre Dumas, those including the key-word « poison » related to detailled descriptions of poisoning and in wich the substance is known. We included thirteen writings in this study. The poisons used by the author in those writings are : strychnine, brucine, mercuric chloride, morphine acetate and arsenic. This study finds an important heterogeneity concerning the semiologic plausibility of the poisonning descriptions in those writings : five wrintings present semiologic descriptions compatible with the actual knowledge of science, five writings describe a partial plausibility and three writings find no plausilibility at all. This heterogeneity could be explained partly by the use Dumas chooses to make toward the sources he consults to write some of the writings and parly because of fictional choices made by the author.
