État des lieux de la prescription des probiotiques chez l’enfant par les médecins généralistes de Gironde

Abstract : Introduction: the probiotic market is booming, however evidence of their efficacy is limited to specific strains and indications. Despite recent international guidelines, it is not always easy to make evidence-based probiotic prescriptions. The objective of this study was to assess the opinion, knowledge and prescriptions of general practitioners of Gironde, France concerning probiotic use in children patients. Methods: between April and June 2019, 268 general practitioners of Gironde answered a web-survey with 28 questions. Results: 59% of the doctors had a positive opinion towards probiotics and 79% considered they were effective in treating patients. 57% of doctors prescribed them regularly, most often in conjunction with another treatment. However, 60% declared not being at ease with the topic and 71% felt a lack of education. Lastly, only 12% mentioned having knowledge of guidelines. Hence a low rate of guideline conformity in prescriptions: 34% in treatment of infantile colic, 19% in the prevention of antibiotic associated diarrhea, 10% in the treatment of acute diarrhea and 5% in irritable bowel syndrome. Conclusion: probiotics are frequently prescribed in primary care for children but these results must encourage physicians to learn best practices in order to guide their decision making in the choice of strain, dosage and duration according to current data.
