Identité sociale, identité politique : l'ambassadeur français et l'écrit de soi. Mémoires et écrits privés d'acteurs diplomatiques français

Abstract : What it is like, being a french diplomat in eighteenth century’s Europe ? What does it represent for the men charged with such a task and sent all across Europe ? Some of them end up writing memoirs and journals, in a way of reminiscing their time and experience serving the french diplomacy. They write about their missions, their collegues, their everyday life and share what it was like, for them, to live and work in a different country and a different royal court, and how significant their work was in their eyes. The interest of these memoirs resides in the personnal approach theses writings give us of a job which wasn’t one back then : the diplomat, this man serving the kings and queens of its time, and who’s unfolding itself in these writings. This approach is the one studied in this research : the identity of the ambassador, its image and its figure, through the eyes and the words of the men that had been wielding the title.
