Le domaine de chasse de Rambouillet et le gouvernement de la nature : monarchie, empire, république (1783-1995)

Abstract : As a royal, imperial and presidential residence, the domain of Rambouillet has hosted sovereigns and royal hunts since the Middle Ages. In 1783, Rambouillet was bought by Louis XVI from his cousin the Duke of Penthièvre. The domain thus became the king’s private domain. During the French Revolution it became a National property. Then, Napoleon I, Charles X, Napoléon III and all the French presidents have found in Rambouillet a perfect place to rest and to organize State hunts. Rambouillet is situated fifty kilometers West of Paris, and thirty kilometers from Versailles and is composed of two hunting parks and a large forest. The domain was the center of the presidential hunts from 1880 to 1995. At the crossroads of cultural history and environmental history this study focusses on the government of nature. The relationship between Rambouillet and hunting is symbiotic and coevolutionary. To study hunting allows to link the different spaces and actors and to reconsider the non-human history in Rambouillet. The environmental transformations, knowledge on nature and the hunting practices and rites invites us to complexity between humans and non-humans. Far from the divisions between nature and culture, wild and tame, the domain of Rambouillet prompts us to consider the place of hunting, animals and humans within a historical socio-ecosystem. Beyond the image of a dominated and passive nature, this history of Rambouillet seeks to reestablish Rambouillet as a gamey, living and dynamic domain.
