Impact d’une Formation Médicale Continue traitant de la prise en charge de l’enfant diabétique de type 1 sur les pratiques professionnelles des médecins généralistes : étude qualitative par entretiens semi-dirigés

Abstract : Objective: diabetes is a common pathology in general practice. Type 1 diabetes mellitus accounts for more than 95% of children's diabetes in France. The increase in the incidence of type 1 diabetes mellitus is particularly important in young children, requiring adaptation of the health care system. The general practitioner (GP) may have to take care of type 1 diabetic children in his patient. In response to this, we have developed a Continuing Medical Education (CME) program validating Continuing Professional Development (CPD) on the management of type 1 diabetic child for GPs following a type 1 diabetic child. The main objective was to evaluate afterwards the interest that GPs had found in this CME. Materials and methods: the training was aimed at the 259 GPs of children with type 1 diabetes mellitus followed in the pediatric endocrinology department of Bordeaux University Hospital. Seventeen GPs participated in the training. We conducted a qualitative, prospective, observational study with step 3 evaluation based on the Kirkpatrick’s model on the evaluation of training programs through individual semi-structured interviews. Ten interviews were conducted six months after the training. Results: the GPs report an improvement of their theoretical knowledge with learning of precise and adapted as well as practical concepts with a better control of the sensors including Freestyle Libre® system. They are more comfortable in follow-up and more involved in the care with a better vigilance against intercurrent diseases. Conclusion: GPs participating in this CME have acquired new medical knowledge and behaviors leading to improved quality of care and changes in their professional practices benefiting children with type 1 diabetes mellitus.
