L’Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing en prévention primaire du syndrome post-commotionnel et du trouble de stress post-traumatique aux urgences : essai randomisé contrôlé

Abstract : Background: the Post-Concussion-Like Syndrome is an important cause of decline in quality of life and repeated general practice consultations. Many therapeutic approaches have been put forward, including Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). However, no prospective study has assessed the efficacy of an early EMDR session in the Emergency Department. Objective: compare the effect of a single EMDR session to usual care on the incidence of Post-Concussion-Like Syndrome at three months after a visit to the Emergency Department. Materials and method: two-site, open-label randomized controlled trial, involving 313 patients aged of 18 or more, admitted in the Emergency Departments of Bordeaux and Lyon Teaching Hospitals between January and July 2018. Results: among the patient included in this study, an unique EMDR session by R-TEP protocol did not significantly reduced the incidence of Post-Concussion-Like Syndrome three months after the intervention. This effect seems to be influenced by the level of stress at admission. Conclusion: the results of this study suggests that the effects of EMDR therapy at the Emergency Department after a traumatic event should be assessed by larger studies and a focus on the effect of the stress level at admission.
