Douleurs musculosquelettiques et charge mentale des apprentis coiffeurs : étude descriptive

Abstract : Introduction: The objective of our study was to describe musculoskeletal pain (MSKP) as well as the mental load perceived by apprentice hairdressers (AH) Materials and methods: An ad hoc questionnaire was submitted to 200 AH from the largest school in Marseille (second city in France), assessing the socio-demographic characteristics and the job position occupied. Mental load was addressed using 11 items from the Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire and 6 questions on work stressors (relationship with supervisor, colleagues, clients, time constraints, physical hardship and work organization). The AHs were also asked about the characteristics of the MSKP likely to be presented and their treatment. Results: More than three-quarters of the AH interviewed (81%) presented DMS, including 81% on multiple sites. Most (83.2%) of the subjects, predominantly female, report having presented MSD after the start of their apprenticeship and 28% of them regularly benefit from treatment for pain relief. MSKP of the upper limbs are treated significantly (p = 0.04) more frequently than MSKP of another location. MSKP of the upper limbs are significantly more frequent in AHs aged less than 19 years old (p = 0.04) and whose duration of exposure is longer (> 2 years) (p = 0.04). They are significantly more present in apprentices reporting a high work rate (p = 0.04) and a lack of intervention on their quantity of work distributed (p = 0.04). AH report having enough time to complete their tasks, a feeling of a job well done and satisfaction with their learning. Conclusion: While being satisfied with their learning, AHs report a high prevalence of MSKP. The preventive measures must target the biomechanical factors but also the pace of work and the intervention on the quantity of work. These results must be confirmed by additional multicenter studies.
