Attitudes des médecins généralistes landais face aux personnes atteintes de démence en amont de l’ouverture du « Village Landais Alzheimer »

Abstract : Dementia is frequent without any curative treatment. It’s scaring the general population, and affected people and their families are often stigmatized. Many projects try to change society pejorative beliefs about dementia. Our study explored attitudes of general practitioners (GPs) towards people affected by dementia in Landes department, prior to the opening of a new « dementia-friendly » initiative: the Village Landais Alzheimer (VLA). All GPs of Landes department were contacted by postal mail and invited to fill in a multiple choice test. Our primary parameter of relevance was the rate of GPs, afraid of developing dementia themselves. 49% (n=174) of Landes GPs participated. Only 20% were concerned of developing dementia (n=35). The most frequent negative feeling was the frustration (55%). 95% of GPs in our study associate the deterioration of the social status to dementia. 70% considered early diagnosis to be beneficial (n=120). 142 GPs were supportive of the VLA, whereas 13% (n=21) were against. GP’s attitude are conducted by their professionnal ethic but can be influenced by the negative public opinion. The study will be reconducted in two years, after the opening of the VLA, to assess its impact on their representations of dementia.
