Le coeur du quartier Saint-Merri dans l'entre-deux- guerres : îlot d'insalubrité n°1

Abstract : This thesis analyses the social history of a district in central Paris in the interwar period (1920'-1930'). The population, mainly workers, was poor. There was a lot of tuberculosis. I analyse the profil of the population, the state of the buildings, and the representations of this district in the media (press) and the literature. This district frightened high class people, but at the same time attracted them, because it was poetic. Many years after, the government demolished this district. Now there is the Centre Pompidou at this place. The church Saint-Merri is still standing nearby.
