Qualité de vie de l’enfant allergique alimentaire : comparaison à d’autres pathologies chroniques à travers une étude prospective unicentrique française

Abstract : Introduction : Food allergy affects about 8% of the global population with a constant increasing prevalence, especially in children. Its manifestations can be life-threatening. Health-related quality of life measurement appears to be an interesting tool to evaluate food allergic children. We aimed to compare their quality of life to children with other chronic diseases related to allergic or feeding areas.
Outils et Méthodes : We included patients aged from 8 to 17 with food allergy, asthma, inflammatory bowel diseases, Celiac disease, diabetes, obesity and eating disorders followed in Nice Children hospital (Hôpitaux pédiatriques de Nice CHU Lenval. During the consultation, children were invited to complete the CHQ-CF87 generic quality of life questionnaire exploring 12 quality of life domains.
Résultats : We recruted 390 patients including 135 food allergic patients and 255 with other chronic diseases (94 asthmatics, 70 diabetics, 50 obeses, 19 with eating disorders, 18 with inflammatory bowel diseases and 4 with Celiac disease. Our results showed that food allergic patients had better quality of life scores in two domains compared to asthmatic patients, four domains compared to inflammatory bowel diseases patients, five domains compared to diabetic patients and nine domains compared to obese and eating disorders patients.
Discussion : Food allergic patients had better quality of life scores than other chronic diseases patients. This can be in link with a clear underestimation of fatal risk and a good acceptance of eviction diet but also with recent improvement in FA management. Our study also underlines the remaining efforts to improve quality of life in other chronic diseases.
