Histoire et représentations au cinéma : Cuba dans l'imaginaire américain au regard des relations américano-cubaines (1898-2014)

Abstract : In 1898, the United States intervened in the Cuban War of Independence against Spain whereas, at the same time, the cinema emerges and takes its first steps as an ideological tool. As a popular art which entertains masses represented by Hollywood, the film industry is the reflection of the way that Americans see themselves and the rest of the world. While Cuba entered into the American imaginary as a protectorate and then a tropical "paradise" where, however, bribery and violence take place, the Revolution led by Fidel Castro was a shock for mentalities. In the middle of an ideological conflict between the United States and the USSR, the perception of the Cuban government by the American cinema evolved in accordance with both context and mentalities. Nowadays most of the representations, whether they are realistic or standardized, are the consequence of this close link between the historical context and a cultural tool. Therefore we must go back on this history to understand how some of our current representations were shaped.
