Prise en charge des enfants sourds au cabinet dentaire : évaluation des besoins bucco-dentaires

Abstract : Most of the time, deaf patients are forced to consult caregivers, who communicate verbally and are unaware of Deaf ways to say and do. Among the Deaf population, this lack of knowledge is the source of some anxiety regarding the medical field. Deaf children appear all the more anxious and sometimes hostile for fear of not understanding what we are going to ask them. Therefore, dentist’s attitude is not always adequate to treat them effectively. Based on this observation, the objective of this thesis is to target the needs and identify the difficulties for the deaf patient as well as the practitioner. The survey is based on questionaries collected from 28 parents of hearing impaired children and 71 dentistry students. The analysis of their answers reveal that the most important difficulty is communication. This is essential for patient cares, so we produced an informative leaflet for dentists to guide them in this care. It explains the essential points of deafness as well as the behaviours and actions to be taken in the dental office.
